What was once the western United States is now home to the Republic, a nation perpetually at war with its neighbors. Born into an elite family in one of the Republic’s wealthiest districts, fifteen-year-old June is a prodigy being groomed for success in the Republic’s highest military circles. Born into the slums, fifteen-year-old Day is the country’s most wanted criminal. But his motives may not be as malicious as they seem.
From very different worlds, June and Day have no reason to cross paths—until the day June’s brother, Metias, is murdered and Day becomes the prime suspect. Caught in the ultimate game of cat and mouse, Day is in a race for his family’s survival, while June seeks to avenge Metias’s death. But in a shocking turn of events, the two uncover the truth of what has really brought them together, and the sinister lengths their country will go to keep its secrets.

This is the second time I’ve read this book and I’m so excited to actually continue on with the series now!
I forgot how much I enjoyed this book the first time I read it, but I can’t wait to read the rest of the series! I’m starting this thing with myself that I’m only going to try and have 2 series going at once (unless they’re not complete), just to keep myself accountable. This is my brother’s favorite book series and he asked me if I would read the whole series this time around. I told him absolutely, because he never gives me recommendations lol.
This book was so fun to read and it is SO fast paced. I feel like I flew through this! I’ve been reading it for a little less than a week, but I’ve only read it for three days… if that makes any sense.
My first review of this book has more coherent thoughts about plot and characters, but I love Day and June. I love them together and I love them individually. I completely forgot how cool it was how Metias left the message for June. I love that he knew she was smart enough to actually figure it out. So cool.
I can’t wait to see where this series goes! My brother said the last book made him cry but is the best book he’s ever read. Who knows. I’ll probably LOVE it :)
