THE SCYTHE WIELDER’S SECRET CONTINUES

Susan Sarnio made a choice, and will spend the rest of her life as the only female Death. Last year she was bullied and ostracized. Now, to her complete bewilderment, four Deaths vie for her affection. Yet, something is terribly wrong at the College of Deaths. When a ship carrying scythe metal is attacked, many blame the newly-freed Elementals, but Susan knows the Elementals are innocent.

Shadows from the distant past come to light. Dragons circle the horizon, blood spills, and nothing is what it seems. Susan and her friends struggle to stop a war. They search for the fabled First Scythe, hoping to sway the balance, but who is the true enemy?

3 out of 5 stars

Huge thank you to Christopher Mannino for sending me this book!

This being the second in the series, I don’t want to give too much away, but I enjoyed this book. This more a 3.5/5 stars, but I don’t usually do half stars. Anyway, I love the idea behind this series. It’s unique and unlike anything I’ve read before. Suzie gets thrust into this world of male deaths in her early teenage years, and she doesn’t know what to do, but takes it day by day. In the first book Suzie becomes friends with Billy and Frank, and their friendship continues throughout the second book. Suzie, being the first female in a very long time, of course has to find a boyfriend, and she chooses Billy, so I’m happy with that. I kind of knew they were going to be a thing since the beginning of the first book, but it was nice to see them together.

This book was a transition book, so it was just leading to the big point in the next story. We did get to learn a little more about Boskery in this book; Boskery is the soccer/football-esque sport in the world of Deaths. Suzie, or Susan, also finds a bracelet in her special library that holds secrets from the past. She is intrigued by the bracelet, so she holds onto it and mysterious things begin to happen.

Near the end, Susan and Billy, or Will, get taken on a trek to find more material that the weapons are made of. Things go down, and years are taken, dragons appear, and people are taken. This book ends in a nice cliffhanger, so I’m anxious to read the next one!

Intimidating TBR

TBR.

To Be Read.

The intimidating pile of unread books.

Books, books, and huh. More books.

Now. The problem of having “too many books” isn’t really a big problem. Why would it be a big deal to have a variety to choose from? Hmmmm.

I am currently 7 books behind on my Goodreads goal, but I have about 200 books on my shelves that I’d love to read. How does this happen? I am going to blame my busy life and the school year coming to a close, but I also have a difficult time deciding on a book. The thing with me is that I impulsively start books even if I don’t want to just because I feel obligated to read them because I’ve read the first few in the series.

Shocking, but true. Why would you choose to read something you don’t want to, Aubrey? Idk man.

My TBR pile is extremely large, and it is my goal to read as many of the books on my shelves as I can this year. I’ve read 24 books this year, and I’m pretty proud of that, but I’m still behind on my Goodreads goal. *cough 7 books.* I find that I struggle with having a large TBR pile because I feel overwhelmed and obligated to read and finish books. Problem? Yes and no.

I think my plan for attacking my pile of unread books is to just read them in the order on my shelves. I have all of my books in a beautiful rainbow *with some overflow on the top* and I always look at them and am proud of the books I’ve read. So, I think it would be good for me to read them as they appear on my shelves.

I also think that I should finish the *way too* many series I’ve started. I haven’t read all the Harry Potter books. I know. I know. I’m reading them this summer. Pinky promise. I’ve not finished the Giver Quartet. I haven’t finished Percy Jackson, Vampire Academy, Twilight, A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Hundred, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Rebel Belle, The Wrath and the Dawn, Outlander, The Raven Cycle. The list literally just goes on and on and on and on. I think that I NEED to finish some of these series in order to feel better about myself and have some closure.

I have no idea how I’m going to read all my books, but my goal is to have all the books on my shelves read before I leave for college. I have one and a half full years.

I CAN DO IT.

Take down the intimidating TBR pile!

Meeting Cassandra Clare!

Yesterday marked an amazing day that I had been waiting for since the beginning of the year… I got to meet Cassandra Clare! Here is a story of how the day went:

My mom and my friends, Maddie and Andi, and I met at 6:45 and drove the three and a half hour drive to Omaha, Nebraska. I drove the whole way in my silver Jeep Liberty named Luna (as in Luna Lovegood), and we get to the place the signing is going to be at. Alright. So we pull up to the middle school/library and we see about 100-150ish cars in the parking lot and absolutely NO SPOTS LEFT. We were freaking out. It was literally 10:30 am when we got there and the event started at 1:30… How were there so many people there already?!

We walk up to the entrance and talk to a doorman person and he tells us to go to a different door for the signing. Cool. We think that there will be a huge line. We wouldn’t get to meet her. She wouldn’t get to sign our books. Oh my gosh. NO! We came all this way, and we walk over to the door and there are seven girls. Seven. 7. Siete. We later find out that there is a church service happening during the morning. So we meet these girls and fangirl a little bit and talk about books and everything. They asked us how far we were in Lady Midnight. I was the furthest of the group *cough cough* not floating my own boat, but I’m amazing ;)

We sit down and hang out with them for a little while and then figure out we’re at the wrong door. Okay, so we walk over to the original door and sit down in the line that we started. There were about ten of us there until 11:30, and then EVERYONE and their mother started showing up. We were within the first ten people of a crowd of about 400 people. It paid off that we got there early! My mom and aunt (who lives in Omaha) brought us some pizza and bread sticks at 11:45ish and we sat down on the pavement and ate that. It was really great, actually. Props to Little Caesars.

Anywho. So we wait until 1:30, and they let us into the auditorium that the Q&A would be in. Since we were at the front of the line we got to sit in the front row. The event was scheduled to start at two, so by the time everyone was settled and in their seats it was 1:45ish. We all waited and waited for 2:00 to happen, and then there was an announcement saying that their tour bus was late.

It was 20 minutes late. I get that traffic is bad, but for real. Ugh. So we wait the extra 20 minutes. Then the moment we’ve all been waiting for. Cassandra Clare, Holly Black, and Sarah Rees Brennan all walk into the auditorium and everyone FREAKS out. Oh my gosh it was so great! The three took questions from the audience and answered them. We got some hope for a Malec book. Holly Black said that Will Herondale was her favorite character. Sarah Rees Brennan said that Julian was her favorite. Cassandra Clare didn’t say a favorite, but I think that it’s Jace.

After the Q&A there was the signing portion. We went out into the lobby and got our books signing. I have a book that Cassandra Clare wrote my name in for me! Ahh!

It was an amazing experience, and I highly suggest going to an author event no matter who the author is if you have the chance to! It was one of the best experiences of my life, honestly. My boyfriend, who didn’t go cause not a book nerd, finally witnessed my full fangirl mode. I FaceTimed him for an hour and a half and I’m pretty sure he got in about 15 maybe 20 words the whole time.

OH WELL!

Lady Midnight Release!

THE RELEASE IS TOMORROW! I have been waiting for this for so long, and I am so excited to start this book tomorrow!! Now, I am going to try and finish Lady Midnight before the 13th because that’s when I get to go and meet Cassandra Clare at her signing. I would love to have it done by then, and I think I’m going to try and make a short video about the trip as well. You guys. I am so fricking excited. I totally get that ARCs are cool and all, but there really isn’t anything better than starting a book on the actual release date. This is a super short post, but I just wanted to tell/remind people that it does come out tomorrow, so order it on your e-readers or stop into a bookstore and pick up a copy!

Not Finishing Books

Am I the only one who feels bad when they don’t finish a book? I have always felt bad stopping in the middle of a book because I feel as though I’m not giving the author and the publisher enough credit. But. I also believe that life is too short to read bad books.

Now, not to say that the books I’ve stopped reading are bad in general, but it was a wrong time for me to read it or I just wasn’t feeling it, and that is okay. I have struggled with this my whole life, and have only stopped reading a few books throughout my life. I stopped these books because of myself being reminded that life is to short to read books I’m not loving. I will finish a book or a series if I feel like there are some redeeming qualities to it, but I don’t want to read a book I’m not excited to read in the first place.

I decided to write about this because I stopped reading The Ghost Bride because I really wasn’t liking it. The names were confusing me, the culture didn’t make sense to me, I didn’t like the idea of someone marrying a ghost. There wasn’t anything going for me, so I decided to stop pressuring myself, and just stop. It’s okay to stop because it is just a single book. There are so many wonderful books out there that I’ve not read and will never get the chance to read, so why would I want to read books I don’t like?

How do you feel about quitting books? What books have you quit?

Preordering Books

Hello, hey, hi.

I just preordered a book for the first time. Go me! I’ve never actually had books on preorder because I felt that I would just get them and not read them right away, but I just ordered Lady Midnight on my Nook, and I’m so excited. I’ve not been this excited for a new release, really, since City of Heavenly Fire *review*.

Now, I think the reason I’ve never had the inclination to preorder a book is because of the fact that I am very timid when it comes to new books. I have so many books that I have to read, that I feel like when I want a bunch more it just makes me more overwhelmed with the amount of books on my TBR list. It really is overwhelming when you have a lot of books you’d love to read! The reason I preordered this book on my Nook is because I want to have the book read by the 13th when I get to see Cassandra Clare! I get to meet my favorite author and I’m so pumped. I want to buy the copy of Lady Midnight in hardcover at the actual event and then have her sign it oh my gosh I’m so excited.

Do you preorder a lot of books? What preorder are you most looking forward to?

Going Into Books Blindly

I love reading, obviously, but I hate knowing the entire plot before starting a book. A brief synopsis? Fine. Being spoiled? NOT OKAY.

It is basically my motto to ‘go into books blindly.’ I hate knowing what is going to happen at every moment. I hear people talk about books on BookTube and get interested by just hearing a small review of the book. I honestly don’t usually even read reviews of books before I start them. I love not knowing what it’s about and figuring it out as I go.

Of course I’ve had bad experiences with this, but it is okay to stop reading a book if you don’t love it. Yesterday I went to Barnes and Noble and bought Shatter Me – Tahereh Mafi. I don’t even know what it’s about really, but I know that Whitney from WhittyNovels on YouTube LOVES this series, and I like books that she likes. I trust her judgement, so I bought it and plan on reading it soon.

The best is just going into a bookstore and reading the synopsis and buying it if it sounds good. It’s okay to not read reviews to make sure you’ll love it. Reading is a fun hobby, so being spontaneous with it is cool.

Do you go into books blindly, or do you read multiple reviews before buying it?
