He is a Legend.

She is a Prodigy.

Who will be Champion?

June and Day have sacrificed so much for the people of the Republic—and each other—and now their country is on the brink of a new existence. June is back in the good graces of the Republic, working within the government’s elite circles as Princeps-Elect, while Day has been assigned a high-level military position.

But neither could have predicted the circumstances that will reunite them: just when a peace treaty is imminent, a plague outbreak causes panic in the Colonies, and war threatens the Republic’s border cities. This new strain of plague is deadlier than ever, and June is the only one who knows the key to her country’s defense. But saving the lives of thousands will mean asking the one she loves to give up everything.

With heart-pounding action and suspense, Marie Lu’s bestselling trilogy draws to a stunning conclusion.

5 out of 5 stars

DEFINITELY the best of the trilogy!

I loved reading Champion and am SO HAPPY my brother bullied me into reading these books. Wow. All I can say is wow.

Champion follows Day and June after the events that happen in Prodigy. June takes a position as the Princeps-Elect in order to work closely with the government as she’s been trained to do her whole life. Day’s headaches are progressively getting worse, and he finally has a diagnosis. There is a plague breakout with no cure. The former United States is rivaling and the Republic needs outside help. Will they get the help they need? Who will be champion?

Guys. This series is so fricking good. This last book was the PERFECT way to end the series and I honestly don’t think I’ve read an ending that was better than this one. The way this ended was tragically sad, but also beautiful and perfect. I just have so many emotions regarding literally everything that happened in this book.

I was a little angsty about how Prodigy ended, so I knew that something had to be resolved right away at the beginning of Champion, but it took so long, but was also a perfect amount of waiting. Wow, okay this doesn’t even sound like anything lol.

Because I don’t want to spoil anything, I don’t want to go into much detail with… anything, but this was such a great ending.

I love Day. I love June. I love them together. I love Anden. I love all of the characters in this series.

So many things happened in this book and I think this book specifically, goes to show how talented Marie Lu is. I want to read more books by her because I know that I’m going to love them!

READ THIS SERIES.

Desperate for help, they turn to the Patriots – a vigilante rebel group sworn to bring down the Republic. But can they trust them or have they unwittingly become pawns in the most terrifying of political games?

THE ENDING. WHAT?!

Ugh the end of this book broke me. I almost started crying, so I’m not feeling very prepared for the ending of Champion because I’ve heard it’s so sad. Wow, okay coherent thoughts….

Prodigy is the second installment to the Legend trilogy. It follows Day and June as they escape from the Republic and join the Patriots, the rebel group. The Patriots have always wanted Day on their side because he’s the best criminal in the whole country, and June is the Republic’s prodigy. They’re wanted because they’re extremely valuable. Not to mention, they’re on the run from the Republic with no money, and Day can barely walk. They get taken in by the Patriots, and things seem too good to be true, but are they?

Wow.

The only reason I didn’t give this 5 stars was because it was fairly slow during the middle 1/3. It kind of fell into the “second book syndrome,” where it was a lot of explaining and figuring out the whole world and why things are going wrong, proving that things aren’t what they seem. I think this book is *obviously* detrimental to the trilogy, but it was slower than I would have liked.

There were so many scenes that had me on the edge of my seat *while laying in bed…* that I was anxious about! Anxious in a good way because I COULDN’T STOP READING for the last 1/3. The last parts redeemed the whole book for me, but the ending was SO SAD.

SPOILERS:

If you haven’t read this book you can click off, k thanks.

Why the frick wouldn’t Day tell June the real issue at the end?!

I’m just confused, because this might just solidify that BOYS R DUMB or that he’s actually a super great guy who didn’t want to put burden on the girl that he loves. But my goodness they love each other so much why didn’t he just tell her. It just breaks my heart. You could feel June’s heart breaking in the last chapter. She didn’t know what to do, and knew that Day was hiding something, but didn’t want to push this issue and ugh.

I like June and Day, but I also kind of ship June and Anden… Is that wrong? I know that the whole idea of adding him as a romantic interest is to create the love triangle, but I’m kind of here for it. I usually am not a huge fan of love triangles, but I can he here for this one. Day and Anden are SO different from each other, so it’s almost hard to compare them, thus the love triangle is justified… in my mind.

END OF SPOILERS.

I’m really enjoying this series and am so glad that I re-read Legend before continuing on. I can’t wait to read Champion because I NEED to know how the trilogy ends. Wow I’m just kind of blown away tbh.

Also, Champion will be my first “real” read of Booktubeathon! I’m participating in Booktubeathon again and I’m so excited! I’m daily vlogging on my YouTube channel (aubreyjoybooks) so a video should be up tonight or tomorrow morning. I’m so excited to see how much I can read! My TBR is probably overly ambitious, but we’re gonna go for it.

BookTubeAThon TBR

BookTubeAThon started today! Usually I like to have TBR posts up a couple days before the beginning of a readathon, but I’ve been very busy with band camp and didn’t get the change to write it out! If you don’t know what BookTubeAThon is, it’s a week long readathon hosted by some booktubers on YouTube. Ariel Bissett is one of the founders of this awesome event.

This year’s challenges:

  1. Read a book with blue on the cover.
  2. Read a book by an author who shares the same first letter of your last name. *Browning is my last name.*
  3. Read someone else’s favorite book. *this is one of my best friend’s favorite books.*
  4. Read the last book you acquired.
  5. Finish a book without letting go of it.
  6. Read a book you really want to read.
  7. Read 7 books.

Will I read all of these books? Probably not. Am I still going to participate? Yes.

BookTubeAThon Wrapup

“Aubrey, where have you been?” Well. I’ve been lazy and at home along with two weeks of band camp, but I’ve had no internet. We had Verizon for our internet provider and then halfway through the month all our data got used but we had no idea why. So my mom called the Verizon store and cancelled our internet. I thought we would have it back by the beginning of August, like my mother said, but no. Of course that didn’t happen. So, I haven’t been intentionally neglecting my blog, I promise. Now for the wrapup :) For BookTubeAThon I read 5 books! I’m honestly really proud of myself. I mean I know you were supposed to read 7, but I got 5 finished. I read The Giver (The Giver Quartet #1) – Lois Lowry, The Reptile Room (A Series of Unfortunate Events #2) – Lemony Snicket, Gathering Blue (The Giver Quartet #2) – Lois Lowry, The Great Gatsby – F. Scott Fitzgerald, and finally Messenger (The Giver Quartet #3) – Lois Lowry. I loved being able to participate in BookTubeAThon! It was so much fun :) I plan to do it again next summer. Thank you to all of you who have stuck around for the last couple of weeks in my wifi-free time ;) It means a lot to have this big of an audience :)

Booktube Made Me Do It (7)

Day 7 was to show where you’ve read. I have a reason why I didn’t follow through with posting every day of BookTubeAThon. My brother has been playing a lot of games on Xbox which has been using a lot of internet, so my mom and dad told him he needed to shut off the internet. What. Completely not fair, but it is what it is. So I can’t use internet until the 1st of August. I know, I know. That’s a long time, but I will make up for it during August :) So all my posts will be later. I will be doing my BookTubeAThon Wrapup post, my monthly wrapup and TBR, all my reviews, and the Rainbow Readathon TBR. Join me in the Rainbow Readathon and link your posts about it in the comments on any of my posts :) It’s an Instagram challenge so search #rainbowreadathon for the details on that. Oh, and you can tag me in any of your posts on Instagram about it if you’d like. My Instagram name is aubreybrowning. Anywho, the places I read were in my comfy bed, my living room couch, my car, and my living room floor. I don’t have any pictures, but that’s where I read :) Bear with me and my lack of wifi. I’ll be continuing with posts the first day of August.

Booktube Made Me Do It (6)

Todays theme was 5 things from a book you’ve read this week. I picked 5 things from The Giver.

  1. Red hair – Fury cover (girl with red hair. obviously)
  2. Apple – ha ha I’m so punny
  3. A red book – Paper Towns because John Green is PERFECT
  4. Mom – because his mom is mentioned
  5. Dad – because is dad is mentioned

I know that people aren’t technically things, but I’m counting it :)

Booktube Made Me Do It (5)

I know, I know. Bad blogger award goes to me. I was out of town yesterday so I didn’t have access to a computer. The struggle is real. But the theme for the fifth day of BookTubeAThon was a rainbow of your favorite books. So… I basically just made a rainbow. A lot of my favorite books are with my friends because I insisted that they read them.

If I would have been using my favorite books The Fault in Our Stars would have been in there. But I have Love, Aubrey for red, City of Glass for orange, Everything on a Waffle for yellow (which is actually one of my favorite books), City of Bones for green, City of Ashes for blue, Shadow Kiss for purple (haven’t even read this one…. oops), and Lock and Key for pink.

Review: Gathering Blue (The Giver #2) – Lois Lowry

Gathering Blue (The Giver Quartet #2) – Lois Lowry

Title: Gathering Blue

Author: Lois Lowry

Release Date: January 1, 2000

Publisher: Ember

Format: Paperback

Page Number: 240

Source: Bookstore

In her strongest work to date, Lois Lowry once again creates a mysterious but plausible future world. It is a society ruled by savagery and deceit that shuns and discards the weak. Left orphaned and physically flawed, young Kira faces a frightening, uncertain future. Blessed with an almost magical talent that keeps her alive, she struggles with ever broadening responsibilities in her quest for truth, discovering things that will change her life forever.

As she did in The Giver, Lowry challenges readers to imagine what our world could become, and what will be considered valuable. Every reader will be taken by Kira’s plight and will long ponder her haunting world and the hope for the future.

4 out of 5 stars

Plot:

In a village there is a hierarchy. Our main character, Kira, is in one of the lowest branches. Kira lives with her mother, and her father is suspected to be killed by the Beasts that live in the Field. Kira is born with a twisted and crippled leg and was supposed to be sent out to the field as an infant, but her mother pleaded and begged to keep her at home. Her mother won that tiny battle, and Kira was kept at home. As infants the villagers are named a one syllable name, and as they age they add more syllables to their name. The oldest person in this book has a four syllable name. That four syllable name is the person that Kira visits to learn to dye thread and yarn. There is something special about Kira. She can embroider and weave. She is put in charge of fixing the Robe. The Robe is the story of their people. The Singer wears this special robe at the Gathering while he sings the history. Kira learns to make the colored threads, but doesn’t know how to make blue. Blue is the color she most desired to make, so her friend goes and finds the plant to create blue. Based on the reviews on Goodreads I was really skeptical. NO ONE LIKED THIS BOOK. I enjoyed this book. Everyone was freaking out that it wasn’t the world as The Giver, but it was. It wasn’t the advanced utopian world, but it was the dystopian side of it. If everything was as advanced as The Giver then it would be a completely different world. I loved that it showed the other side of the world.

Characters:

Kira had two friends. Matt who was in the lowest branch of the hierarchy, and Thomas, The Carver. Thomas carved wood like Kira embroidered. Kira and Thomas were lovable characters. Matt was so cute. It was unclear to how old he was, but he was adorable. He had a pet dog that he nurtured back to health, and he grew up in the Fen. Because he lived in the Fen he had a weird accent. He was probably my favorite character.

Who Would I Be?:

Even though Kira has a twisted leg, I’d choose to be her. I love sewing, and embroidery is kind of like that. She’s just a lovable character. She lost her mother, but she pushed through. She lost her dad, but she pushed through. She was such a strong main character.

Booktube Made Me Do It (3)

Todays challenge for the BookTubeAThon 2014 video/blogging challenge was draw a new cover. I honestly accidentally did this. I was at work and it was really slow because it wasn’t a beautiful day, and I was at the front desk and I just started drawing. I LOVED The Giver so so so so so much. But the reason I didn’t read it before was BECAUSE OF THE COVER. It’s a creepy old guy. That’s it. *see here*

Oh my gosh. I didn’t even think of him like this. The Giver was supposed to be a cool old guy who could see color! Not creepy. Anyway, I drew what I thought would be a pretty cool cover.
