Unpopular Opinions Book Tag

It has been a while since I’ve done a tag; I don’t even remember the last one that I did! This tag is originally from BookTube, and click here to see the original video! Anyway, I’ve decided to do the Unpopular Opinions Book Tag, because I think it’s fun to rant, so here we go ;)

  • 1. Popular book or series that you did not like.

There aren’t a ton of books I despise and rant about, but I really did not like the Seraphina series by Rachael Hartman. I thought it was going to be really cool, but I just really did not like the whole dragon aspect to the story. I think it could have been executed better, honestly. I didn’t think that the writing style was extraordinary, and I just didn’t love the series. Seraphina review. Shadow Scale review.

  • 2. A popular book or series that everyone else seems to hate, but you love.

I am going to choose Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour for this one. EVERYONE loves Morgan Matson, but from the book that I’ve read of hers, I don’t love her. She has a smooth writing style, but I really wasn’t wowed by this book. I love traveling and would like to travel everywhere, but this road trip book wasn’t too great; I don’t know, I just didn’t love it. Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour review.

  • 3. A love triangle where the main character ended up with the person you did NOT want them to end up with or an OTP you don’t like.

I loved Gale from The Hunger Games, but I also loved Peeta. I understand the reasoning behind Katniss’s choice to Peeta, but again, I loved reading about Gale.

  • 4. Popular book genre you don’t typically reach for.

Hmm. I don’t particularly dislike genres because there is always something I can find that I like in a book. Most always, anyway. I find myself not really reaching for contemporary that much, though. I prefer paranormal, fantasy, and dystopian.

  • 5. A popular or beloved character that you do not like.

I honestly didn’t love Tris from the Divergent series. I loved this series (minus the last book; it should have been a duology) but I didn’t love reading about Tris. I didn’t like that everyone thought she was so special. Yes, she was a Divergent, but she’s just the first one to act on it and be very lucky. Many of her experiences were fortuitous.

  • 6. A popular author you can’t seem to get into.

I have tried reading The 5th Wave a few times, and I have no idea why I can’t finish it. My guess is that I just don’t like the writing style; the storyline sounds so interesting, but I can’t seem to get more than 100 pages in. So I am going to choose Rick Yancey for this one.

  • 7. A popular book trope you’re tired of seeing.

Broken or nonexistent families. I understand that not every household is perfect, none are, but I am sick of seeing kids having no limitations just because the parents weren’t written about. Just give me a few books with a strong family dynamic.

  • 8. A popular series that you have no interest in reading.

I honestly don’t really have an interest in reading the Lux series. It’s about aliens, and I get that the writing is cool, but I don’t like aliens or reading about them. I really just don’t have a desire to read these books.

  • 9. The saying goes, “The book is always better than the movie,” but what movie or TV show adaptation do you prefer to the book.

Again, I’m going to add The Hunger Games to this list again. I love the books, and always will. I’ve re-read all of them quite a few times, but there is just something about the movies that is so beautiful and raw. You don’t see the emotion that was put into the characters whilst reading the book. I love Jennifer Lawrence, as do many others, but she is an exceptional actress. She is able to show raw emotion, and was perfect for the role of Katniss.

The Pastry Book Tag

I haven’t done a book tag in quite a while, but I was tagged by AnonymousTallulah (Signing On) in The Pastry Book Tag! Check out her post through the link above!

*all the names of the pastries have a recipe linked to them, you’re welcome ;)*

Croissant: A book that everybody (including you) loves.

I love The Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices books. I love the world Cassandra Clare created and can’t wait to read Lady Midnight. I have reviewed most of the books Cassandra Clare has written, and plan on reading all the ones I’ve not read very soon!

Macaron: A book that was hard to get through but was worth it in the end.

Like AnonymousTallulah said, this is a really hard question! The Power of Half: One Family’s Decision to Stop Taking and Start Giving Back *review* was really great in the end, but took me so long to read. The message was really cool, but it was not grabbing my attention. At the end of the book I was really into it and wanted to find out what was going to happen. I did end up enjoying it, though.

Vol-Au-Vent: Name a book that you thought was going to be amazing but just wasn’t.

The Calling *review* was not as good as I thought it was going to be. I liked it, but I was expecting to be blown away. I was seeing all the reviews on YouTube before the actual release because of the ARCs and needed to have the book. I got it for Christmas and started it right after we got done opening gifts, but couldn’t get into it! I wanted to love it so much! I am excited to read the next book, but it wasn’t what I was expecting.

Pain Au Chocolat: A book that you thought was going to be one thing and turned out to be something else completely.

Zombies Vs. Unicorns *review* was completely different from what I thought it was going to be. I read this for book club and knew that it was an anthology, but didn’t know it would be that creepy. There were some really creepy stories about suicidal unicorns and zombie children. I, again, had no idea what I thought was going to happen, but definitely not what did happen.

Profiterole: A book or series that doesn’t get enough attention.

The Timely Death Trilogy! Shannon A. Thompson herself asked me to read these books, and they were so good! I loved all of these books so much and NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT THEM. *book 1* *book 2* *book 3* They are so cool, and have no hype whatsoever and it makes me so sad that not very many people have heard of them.

Synopsis of Minutes Before Sunset (Timely Death Trilogy #1):

Two destinies. One death.

“Her kiss could kill us, and my consent signed our death certificates.”

Eric Welborn isn’t completely human, but he isn’t the only shade in the small Midwest town of Hayworth. With one year left before his eighteenth birthday, Eric is destined to win a long-raging war for his kind. But then she happens. In the middle of the night, Eric meets a nameless shade, and she’s powerful—too powerful—and his beliefs are altered. The Dark has lied to him, and he’s determined to figure out exactly what lies were told, even if the secrets protect his survival.

Jessica Taylor moves to Hayworth, and her only goal is to find more information on her deceased biological family. Her adoptive parents agree to help on one condition: perfect grades. And Jessica is distraught when she’s assigned as Eric’s class partner. He won’t help, let alone talk to her, but she’s determined to change him—even if it means revealing everything he’s strived to hide.

Croquembouche: A book or series that is extremely complex.

Although I am only on the first one, I can definitely see that Outlander will be a very complex series. I am about 25% through this book and love it, but it takes time to read. You have to think when you read this book, but I know it will be worth it in the end.

Napoleon: Name a movie or TV show that you liked better than the book itself.

I am going to choose The 100 *review* for this one. I loved the actors and actresses who played the characters in the show, and I watched the show before reading the books. That is quite possibly the reason that I enjoyed the show more than the books, but the books did fall a little short for me. The 100 was a really fast read *cough, less than 12 hours. cough, cough* and I did give it 5 stars, but the show was so much better.

Empanada: Name a book that was bittersweet.

Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour *review*. It was really cool to read a book about a road trip, but I didn’t like Amy or Roger. I thought that their relationship was very forced. I really enjoyed the traveling aspect and the pictures in it, but I didn’t love it. It was good to read, but I didn’t love it.

Kolompeh: A book that doesn’t take place in your country.

When I read this question I didn’t think it would be that hard to come up with an answer, but I read a lot of books set in the United States! One of my favorite books isn’t set in the US, though. It is The Wrath and the Dawn *review*, and I can’t explain how much this book surprised me. I read this for book club and I really enjoyed it. It is set in the Middle-East; it was really awesome to read a book from somewhere I’d never read a book about. I can’t wait for the second one to come out!

Pate A Choux: Name one food from a book or series that you would like to try.

I’m going to have to agree with AnonymousTallulah on this one again! I would love to eat anything and everything from Honeydukes in Harry Potter. I went to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando and didn’t get the chance to buy much of the candy, but I wish I could try some from the book! The Butterbeer is really great, just letting you know.

Reading Habits Tag

I’ve decided that I wanted to start making book tag posts because I’ve seen a lot of other people do them, therefore I will do so :)

Found on…. Book Junkies

1. Do you have a certain place at home for reading?

I almost always read in bed, although I love reading on my big comfy chair in our family room. My bed is the most comfortable place in my whole house, so usually that’s where you can find me reading. :) In the spring and summer I like reading outside, as well.

2. Bookmark or random piece of paper?

I usually use a bookmark because I have so many of them laying around my room, but if I am in a different room and can’t find a bookmark I’ll use a scrap of paper until I’m done with that book. I also have this weird thing where I don’t change bookmarks throughout a book… ever. If I start with a scrap of paper as a bookmark, it will be the same scrap of paper when I’m done with the book.

3. Can you stop reading anytime you want or do you have to stop at a certain page, chapter, part, etc.?

I try to always stop at a chapter, but that doesn’t usually work when I’m at school because most of the time I don’t have time to finish the chapter. I usually only get to read in small spurts at school. If I’m at home, though I will always end at a chapter.

4. Do you eat or drink while reading?

Not unless I’m reading on my nook or have a book on my computer. I don’t really want to risk getting my physical books dirty. And it’s just inconvenient when you have to hold the book with one hand and awkwardly prop it open with your other elbow. Just too much work for this lazy girl.

5. Can you read while listening to music/watching TV?

I can’t listen to music and I can’t be directly watching TV. I can sit in the room with the TV on, but I totally tune it out. I apparently cannot focus on more than one task at a time.

6. One book at a time, or several at once?

Only one at a time. I think I’ve only ever read two books at once possibly once in my life. I end up reading and finishing one and putting the other aside until I’m done with the first anyway.

7. Reading at home or everywhere?

I read anywhere. I always have a book with me and feel lost if I don’t. I usually read in the car when we are going somewhere. (I’m only 14, my mom or dad usually drives) I can read even when it’s extremely loud and it doesn’t bother me, but when I’m at home I can’t have music. hmm.

8. Reading out loud or silently in your head?

If it’s a part I’ve read in my head and didn’t understand multiple times, I will read it outloud to myself. Other than that I only read in my head unless someone asks me to read something. :)

9. Do you read ahead or skip pages?

I NEVER skip pages… ever. It feels like cheating the author. They put their time and effort into those words that you’re reading. I also don’t want to miss out on anything, even if it isn’t important. This tends to make me slower than some, but I find myself enjoying the story much more when I read every word.

10. Breaking the spine or keeping it new?

I never crack the spine because then you get the white lines and they irritate me so much. This is why I do not buy mass-market paperbacks even though they could be $10 cheaper, I can’t deal with the cracked spines. Even if the book is huge, I will not purposely crack the spine.

11. Do you write in books?

Absolutely not. I have never written in a book unless it was a textbook. I do mark pages with page flags though. No damage with sticky notes :)

I hope you guys enjoyed my first tag! I will probably continue to do them because they’re kinda fun :)
